about Cathy Boyd

When working as an English teacher earlier in life I could see that what was holding a lot of people back was lack of self-worth rather than lack of ability, and I wanted to train in a field that I saw as being of vital interest and value to human beings. I could see that the education system was lop-sided, educating the mind and not the whole person.

I went ahead and trained as a counsellor initially and then worked as a student counsellor for seven years.

By now I have over 20 year’s experience in the field and work from home in private practice.

“The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.”

Anna Quindlen

therapeutic approach

My training is in the Gestalt model but over time I have been influenced by other theories. Some of the characteristics of Gestalt are:

  • it is client-centred
  • there is an emphasis on embodiment
  • there is an emphasis on the present moment
  • it is a person to person encounter

qualifications

  • Diploma in Gestalt Counselling

My work is supported by clinical supervision and continuous professional development.

I am accountable to the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) which publishes ethical guidelines and has a complaints procedures in place.
